Gabrielle and Louise Howard
Both of Albert Howard’s wives were exceptional women of high intelligence.
Gabrielle was an outstanding botanist who provided crucial scientific support for his research work in India and was in every way his right hand helpmate. Gabrielle died and eventually Albert married her sister Louise who became the driving force in ensuring that his legacy was kept alive, widely communicated and translated into practical action.
A lot of our information about the two women stems from books and papers by Sir Albert, Gabrielle and Louise, particularly from Louise in her books ‘Sir Albert Howard in India’ and ‘Earth’s Green Carpet’.
